Terms of Use
Altiko · September 2026
The essentials
Altiko is free, measures with your phone's own sensors, and is a display instrument, not a navigation or safety device. In the mountains, in the air or under water, do not rely on this app alone.
1. Provider and scope
These terms govern use of the mobile app Altiko, offered by Smettly GmbH, Betriebsstraße 21, 4224 Wartberg ob der Aist, Austria. By installing and using the app you accept them.
The terms of the app store you obtained the app from apply in addition. Where the two conflict, the store's terms govern the purchase transaction itself.
2. What the app does
Altiko shows altitude above sea level, speed over ground, compass heading, rate of climb, the session's highest point, and the rise and set times of sun and moon. The values come from your device's satellite receiver, pressure sensor and magnetic sensor.
The app keeps no recording. Closing it discards every value.
3. Cost
The app is free. There are no in-app purchases, no subscription and no paid features. Any mobile data charges — for instance when opening a sponsor link — are yours.
4. Accuracy and the limits of the measurement
The values shown are estimates and can differ considerably from reality. That is inherent to the measurement, not a defect of the app:
- Satellite positioning is markedly less accurate vertically than horizontally — typically by a factor of two to three.
- Narrow valleys, forest, buildings, vehicle roofs and weather all degrade reception.
- The pressure sensor responds to weather changes, to lifts and to draughts. Not every device has one.
- The compass is disturbed by metal, magnets, speakers and electronics.
- Rise and set times are computed astronomically and refer to the mathematical horizon. A mountain in front of you shifts them.
5. Not for safety-critical use
Altiko is a display instrument for everyday and recreational use. It is expressly not intended for:
- aviation of any kind, in particular not as an altimeter for flying, skydiving or paragliding,
- diving or any use under water,
- mountain rescue, avalanche assessment or other emergency decisions,
- surveying, construction or any purpose requiring an officially defensible figure,
- establishing or contesting speeding offences in road traffic.
Where your life or anyone else's depends on a number, use equipment certified for it.
6. Use in traffic
Do not operate the app while driving. The road traffic rules of your country apply.
7. Advertising
The app shows three sponsor references written into the code. They are advertising and are marked as such. The linked offerings are the sole responsibility of their operators; we accept no liability for their content.
8. Rights in the app
The app, its source code, its design and the Altiko word and figurative marks are protected by copyright and belong to Smettly GmbH. You receive a simple, non-transferable right to use the app on your devices for your own purposes. Reproducing it, reselling it or removing attribution is not permitted, except where the law provides otherwise.
The typefaces used are licensed under the SIL Open Font License; third-party libraries are subject to their own licences.
9. Liability
We are liable without limitation for intent and gross negligence, and for damage arising from injury to life, body or health. For slight negligence we are liable only for breach of material contractual obligations and limited to typical, foreseeable damage.
We are not liable for damage arising because you relied on a displayed value although sections 4 and 5 rule that out. Mandatory claims under product liability law are unaffected.
The app is provided without any assurance of uninterrupted availability. There is no entitlement to future updates or to the continued existence of individual features.
10. Privacy
How the app handles your data is set out in the Privacy Policy. In short: Altiko sends nothing.
11. Termination
You may stop using the app at any time by uninstalling it. That also erases the locally stored settings.
12. Governing law and jurisdiction
Austrian law applies, excluding the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods. If you are a consumer, the mandatory protective provisions of your country of residence remain unaffected and you may also sue at your place of residence. For businesses the place of jurisdiction is Linz, Austria.
The European Commission provides a platform for online dispute resolution: ec.europa.eu/consumers/odr. We are neither obliged nor willing to take part in dispute resolution proceedings before a consumer arbitration body.
13. Severability
Should any provision be invalid, the remainder stays in force.
